This is the story of Lin Kong, a man living in two
worlds. Every summer once a year he visits his family home in village, where
his wife nurses first his mother and then his father, and takes care of Lin’s
daughter. Caught in a loveless marriage, Lin has been in love with an educated,
clever, modern woman, Manna Wu. According to local Party rules, Lin cannot
divorce his wife without her permission until they have been separated for 18
years. Every summer, his wife agrees to
a divorce but then backs out…

family.
